The Sopranos

It was never going to end well was it?

“What can you possibly say about a show of this magnitude? "The Sopranos" has literally redefined television as we know it. It has broken all rules, and set new standards for television excellence. Everything is flawless, the writing, directing, and for me, most of all, the acting. Watching this show you'll find yourself realizing that these characters are NOT real. The acting tricks you into thinking there is a real Tony Soprano, or any character. This show is also very versatile. Some people don't watch the show because it's violent, it's not all about the violence, it's about business, family, and many deeper things that all depend on what you, as a fan see. For me, I don't like when people refer to the show, a show about the Mafia. For me, it's a show about family. A family who, through generations, happen to be apart of the mob. Overall this is a masterpiece of a show. This is what television should be. Right here. Complex characters from stunning acting, magnificent story lines from brilliant writing, and what do you get when you mix these ingredients together? A show that defines excellence, and dares to be different.”

Maybe a little far with the watching real people but I agree.

Hater: Taken from IMDB
“I must be some kind of Pollyanna or something because I couldn't discern one truly humorous moment in this show. What is disturbing is that so many people actually think this sort of thing is hilarious. I watched an episode (the one about the blow job and the car wreck) with a friend who I consider to be an intelligent, subtle person. She stared gaped mouthed at the television for an hour without chuckling once. At the end she turned to me and asked "Wasn't that great!?" No, it wasn't. We are indeed in a sad state of affairs when stuff like this is touted as the greatest television ever. If you like stupid, vulgar, dishonest, violent, murderous, vicious people then 'The Sopranos' is the comedy for you.”

Well I don’t know about “everyone” but I never found Sopranos “Hilarious”! It’s written to be funny at moments but in general I took it extremely seriously! I would simply say, It’s a TV programme!!!!

What I thought:
Now this is Beeonfilm I know but some times I do watch TV. I am however hugely behind as I have only just finished this extremely well reviewed HBO series. I’m with the masses on this one, the Sopranos is the fist time I have ever been hugely invested in the characters since The X Files (to anyone that knows me, that’s a big deal!). The Sopranos takes what we know about gangsters in the movies and goes deeper. It shows us the day to day life of a family coping with having a father in organised crime.

Yes it’s violent but then so is the subject matter, if you don’t like any violence on TV why choose to watch a series about the mafia? The one thing I will bring up is that infamous ending. I have to say I neither hater it or like it, I honestly didn’t want it to end. I could have watched The Sopranos till the cows come home. It’s opened ended and could be seen as a bit of a cop out and geeks on the net will endlessly debate whether or not Tony died in that last scene. I say stop debating and make up the end that most suites you. For me he gets up gives a meadow a kiss then they sit down for dinner, after that life just goes on for The Sopranos…

Of course it meant that some of the fans favourite characters had to pay the price. Part of the formula of a gangster movie or show in this instance is that crime of course never pays, these things never really end well do they?
