Adventureland
coming of age 80’s style

“I love this movie. Truly love it. Being a fan of movie's like "Superbad" and "Knocked Up", I was really looking forward to seeing this, but it was a hell of a lot better than I expected. The Story-line is a great and the characters are fantastic, which nearly everybody can relate to. Kristen Stewart delivers a spectacular role as Em, and Jesse Eisenberg doesn't disappoint. The thing I like most about this movie is Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig. They play the characters of two people who have no expression, and get wound up easily( the scene with the baseball bat is one I will not forget!) There are so many quotes which will make you laugh by these two, my favourite being, 'Litterbug, in the clown mouth!.' Also, the soundtrack is brilliant with some great songs which i would recommend keeping an ear out for. For all ages, young and/or old, Adventureland will not disappoint! 10/10.”

“This is one of the most boring, pointless movies I've ever wasted a night watching. There is little more to the plot than a dude working a crappy job and dealing with a crappy love life. If the filmmakers were attempting to illustrate what a pathetic and soulless decade the 1980's were, job well done, but my guess is they were simply trying to cash in on the success of better written quasi comedies such a Juno and the like. It's been a long time since I've wasted time on a movie that was so boring and pointless. It was billed as a comedy, and as far as laughs go this gets an F-. The acting is mediocre at best, which is really a waste considering the overall talent of the cast. There's not much hope for bringing to life a script that is truly a sh*t sandwich.”

What I thought:
Considering “coming of age, teen comedies etc etc” come out more often then they are really needed, Adventureland like Superbad or Juno before it is a breath of fresh air. It has a subtle approach to the issues you face growing up, meaning that the comedies not in your face, there’s no real gross out comedy or obvious and dumb toilet humour. Adventurland is just a sweet tale of two people working at a small theme park, a realistic blossoming romance which is heart warming to watch.
The characters are all recognizable and acted well, Jesse Eisenberg doing his best not to be Michael Cera, Kirsten Stewart trying to throw off those vampires and Ryan Reynolds playing against his typecast. All three actors owe the director and the script a lot, for giving them characters that are ever so slightly different from what they are known for. It’s just a lovely funny story, not side splittingly hilarious just funny and feel good.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine

“I finally watched X-Men Origins: Wolverine today not too sure what to expect hoping for at least traces of the quality of the previous X Men movies which i love. Let me tell you that i was blown away by this incredible movie and dare i say was the best out of the series. It is action packed and the story line is superb, I was glued to the TV without wanting even to look away for a moment scared id miss something. I found X-Men Origins: Wolverine far more entertaining than Watchmen and several so called blockbusters.Whether you're are an x-Men fan or not do yourself a favor and watch this, I'm sure you'll be pleasantly surprised...”
I can see where this person is coming from I was swept up by it the first time I saw it but by no means is this the best Xmen related feature!

“Close to one of the worst films I have ever seen. The story is so rushed it leaves you asking questions of why? With more focus on the visuals the story seems very slap dash and they have managed to ruin probably one of the best comic book characters. They need to focus at least more on his back story and perhaps the relationship with mutant group established by Stryker. Also they touched upon other characters within the Weapon X Project and then quickly skipped over, as soon as they came in they quickly left (trying not to give anything away). The biggest disappointment, especially after so much hype. This could have been something great. Also with Magneto in the pipeline as well, could they ruin another part of the X-Men saga.”
As time has gone (I have watched it about 4 times now) Wolverine has become a great big toy commercial set to line studio bosses pockets. So I’m kinda leaning more to this guy now.
What I thought:
The first thing I feel I should touch on is plot holes, this film is full of them and makes no effort to resolve them what so ever! Making some of the other mutants who make a cameo just that; a cameo! There is no exploration as to why some of these mutants, some of them stealing the screen when on it (Ryan Reynolds, Dominic Monohaughn) just appear and disappear as the script writers saw fit. Secondly the opening sequence whilst attractive to look at is just that! How did they end up in all of these wars and why is Sabretooth such a psycho?
All of these plot holes can be filled in if you know something about the comics but make no sense if you don’t. I guess on a personal level I hate it because I waited so long to see Gambit in one of these movies and what do I get? Some pubescent loser who plays him with no charm what-so-ever, such a waste of what is a great character!
It’s such a shame when they do this but the Wolverine sequel based on the samurai storyline sounds ten time better, fingers or craws crossed ah? For more on the world of the Xmen and Wolverine read my feature on the right.

A bit less bite

“OK i gotta say this film totally kicks a*s!! i mean i love ALL the blade films,and its not often a sequel is good but blade 2 was excellent and a third to be successful...amazing!!this film was different to the other 2 yeah,but it had to be!it seemed to me that it had to do something different to the other 2, so it was more real world,real life and it definitely got away with it. Wesley snipes played blade just as good as ever,with an extra bit of humour to gave it that bit more. ryan reynolds,an assett to the film,not the typical "super-hero" guy,more down to earth yet kicked butt in his fights,jessica biel,fantastic as there was a woman who was equal to the men and just owned the part! an awesome film,could watch it time and time again. very impressed for a third film! the writer did a great job in creating a new blade film with different,more realistic scenes and storyline. BRILLIANT!”
From even someone who loved blade this is a bit too much praise for what is a mediocre film.

The responsibility lies completely on David Goyer as he finally was given the chance to direct he series he has written since it's inception. This film felt like it should have been on Sci-Fi channel or FX. Those good old days of Blade kicking ass are gone, replaced by Jessica Biel and Ryan Reynolds beating down brittle MTV vampires that couldn't hold a candle to Stephen Dorff's Deacon Frost. I don't even remember seeing Blade fight Dracula, with all the action geared towards his new sidekicks. That's like a Batman movie with Robin as the star. David Goyer now says he'd like to direct Thor......comic fans around the world should now panic as to what he sets his sights on next.”
I have to agree with this one, it’s a Blade film so why did we not see more of Blade?
What I think:
I have to say all things considered I don’t think it was a terrible movie, it would have been nice to see more of blade and it doesn’t really make sense that the human characters are all of a sudden kicking vampire butt. Though Ryan Reynolds is brilliant at these kinds of wise cracking roles and does throw an element previously ruined in its predecessors into the mix; humour. Though this one does seem like the MTV version of Blade, with new weapons that don’t really make any sense at all to ipods shamefully being plugged! The most annoying thing for me is the hyper reality I have spoken about before, in this film when Drake (Dracula) goes for a stroll amongst us lower mortals there is an element of this. It is done so badly it’s almost painful to watch and looks more like a really poor pop video.
There are redeeming factors; the action is once again very entertaining. Ryan Reynolds is a very funny guy and a sequence when Dracula lays waste to the Nightstalkers and a blind mother is done quite well, not scary but looks good. All in all this franchise is a good one for no brains action as the films go on, it’s always good revisiting the first one and nice even if isn’t done as well to follow the character.
